English
First Half of the Year
Spelling: conducted on a weekly basis from 5 words to 5 simple sentences as they move on.
Note #1: Be able to read and write.
Note #2: Be able to know what Punctuation to use in a sentence.
Note #3: Be able to write at least 5 simple sentences by looking at a picture.
Note #4: Be able to describe what happens in a picture. (Oral)
Note #5: Knows when to use ‘Before, After, Above, Under, In Between, Across, Over”.
Note #6: Knows when to use Singular and when to use Plural verbs and common nouns.
E.g. is, are, has, have, do, does, walk, walks (verbs).
E.g. apple, apples, book, books (common nouns)
Note #7: Able to converse with the teacher, at least give a bit of details to show off your vocabulary. (Oral)
E.g. How do you spend your weekends? (Basically, just talk more, not Singlish please)
Note #8: Understand usage of superlative in a given sentence. E.g. Pretty, Prettier, Prettiest.
Second Half of the Year
Spelling: conducted on a weekly basis on a small paragraph of about 3 sentences.
Note #8: Knows the past tense of verbs.
Note #9: Able to write a sentence with 2 helping words per picture.
Note #10: Be able to participate in a Group discussion with the classmates e.g. how to organise a birthday party
Note #11: Able to write a 60 words paragraph (about 8 to 10 sentences) based on 4 pictures.
Maths
First Half of the Year
Note #1: Able to do simple addition and subtraction from 1 to 20. (Must understand Number bonds too)
Note #2: Understands ‘More Than’, ‘Less Than’, ‘Greater Than’, Fewer Than’.
E.g. ? is 2 more than 5.
(The school takes away any one number mentioned here and your kid has to know when to add or subtract to get the answer.)
Note #3: Able to understand Number patterns and also Shape patterns.
E.g. 2, 4, 6, 8, ?
Note #4: Able to do these sums, 4 + 3 = 2 + ?
Note#5: Able to tackle logical questions like this…. E.g.
star + star = 10
star – heart = 2
What number is heart ?
Another one:
Make a tower with 4 cubes of different colours. The yellow cube is at the bottom. The green cube is on the yellow cube. The red cube is between the blue cube and the green cube. Which cube is the top?
Note #4: Able to read and understand problem sums (they are all in english) for simple addition and subtraction, numbers 1 to 20.
Note #5: Arrangement of numbers from smallest to biggest and vice versa.
Note #6: Understand usage of superlative. They will be shown a picture e.g. Which animal is the tallest, which is the smallest, which is the shortest.
Note #7: Understand where is the Left, and where is the Right?
E.g. Colour the 3rd orange from the Left.
Note #8: Knows the words ‘First’ to ‘Tenth’, including their meaning.
E.g. Mary is fourth in a line. There are 5 people behind her. How many people are there in a line?
Second Half of the Year
Note #1: Able to perform double digit addition and subtraction. (Numbers 1 to 100)
Note #2: Knows 1 to 10 Multiplication Timetables. (But I let my kid learn till 12. e.g. 2 x 12.)
Note #3: Able to do simple Division based on above times tables.
Note #4: Able to know what is heavier or lighter on a weighing machine (picture).
Note #5: Able to understand simple pictorial graph presentation. This is easy.
8 Mar 2010: I updated the last part for Math on this date. As long as the kid is well prepared for the English language, the kid will not have much problems for Maths. I also noticed that most kids learn better if real life examples are used or their favourite things are used as examples to show them, it will work really well.
