Chinese Baby’s One Year Old Birthday

According to Chinese Birthday Traditions, One-Year Old Birthday is also a very important event other than the Full Month Celebration of a child. More affectionately, most Chinese parents can identify it is time for baby to make a career decision.  As I am not familiar with such traditions, I leave it to my kids’s grandparents to decide the range of objects representing different professions for baby to pick and I will take care of object sourcing and the birthday cake, and baby’s new clothing. :)

To me, its more of a fun event rather than wondering about baby’s fortune will be, depending on what object will be picked up by baby.  Basically, we prepared the following for baby:
-         A Book
-         A $50 dollar note
-         A Calculator
-         A Ruler
-         A Pen / Pencil
-         A Chicken Drumstick

If the baby picked up the dollar note, he/she may be rich, if the baby reached for a book he/she may become a teacher, if the baby reached for the calculator, he/she may be a businessman/women, if baby picked the ruler, he/she may become a lawyer, if a pen is chosen, baby may become a writer. If baby picked up the chicken drumstick, baby will not have to worry about food, and that baby may become a food gourmet :)  I did a bit of research on this as well, the trend nowadays is actually very flexible, the objects to choose varies from family to family, and the meaning as well, its up to you, really. And there’s no restriction on the number of objects as well.  My in-laws also cooked extra-long noodles, red eggs and glutinous rice for baby as part of the celebration food.  It is served to wish the baby a long life. If you wish to read more on this, I found a webpage on a chinese family living in shanghai who blogged about their son’s one year old birthday celebration, they had lots of objects for picking:-http://home.wangjianshuo.com/archives/20080603_zhuazhou_-_gift_picking_at_1_year_old.htmHappy reading!

[...] Re: Help!!! Baby’s first birthday According to the tradition, child at exactly 1 year old (typically at birthday) will be presented with many things, n each of them has a meaning and represents a profession. The child will pick up something he/she is interested, indicatingl what he/ she will become when he/she grows up. There is no fixed list of things to present, and obviously things changes from accident China to today. The meanings are also not fixed, and parents can decide what everything means before give them to the kid.. Hv fun When a chinese baby turns one year old, it is time to make | SweetieTots [...]
