Electricity Tariffs Up Approx 21.5% In Singapore

As the title said, this is going to be tough for poor families in Singapore.  It starts officially on Children’s Day, 1 Oct 2008.

This is the highest electricity tariff raise ever seen.  The first thing that came to my mind was lots of people will go to coffeeshops to watch TV programmes, then they will start to weigh the cost of coffee they incur by sitting at coffeeshop and cost they incur by sitting at home to watch TV programmes… :p

Yesterday, I was playing my PSP game, Cake Mania, and my darling daughter Sweetie, suddenly pop up the topic to bake cupcakes for her.  She and MiloBoy has been making cakes using PlayDough and cupcakes using Lego ever since we had the Cake Mania loaded onto our PSP.  I suddenly thought of baking cakes requires lots of electricity as you need to use the oven….

Does that mean in the near future, birthday cakes will be a luxury item for medium income families ??!

Hmm, think think, there will be another wave of price increment as costs of operating a business will go up, especially those that use a lot of electricity e.g. Shopping Malls, rental fees may go up!

Save Save Save, expect some families to start a craze for saving electricity bills, taking some drastic measures, than when time goes by, resume to slightly more normal and acceptable ways…. For our family, things will still stay the same way as we have been practising saving electricity and water bills all along, there will be no scrambling or going to coffeeshops or whatever drastic measures to be taken.

Don’t worry about the electricity bill. It is still a lot cheaper making cakes/muffins/bread at home. In July, I was baking almost everyday, the bill went up by about $10. Still reasonable to me.

My cost of baking a dozen of muffins is around $3. It is not possible for you to buy a dozen of muffins at that price!

Thanks for sharing that, its good to know that it does not cost that much afterall.
I have a conventional microwave oven, but I will still choose to buy from confectioneries. My 2 elder kids are sure to ask me to bake muffins/cupcakes once I started doing so….my girl will pester me till I say yes, so I’ll give it a miss for now…..
