How Do You Select The Grade School For Your Kid?

These are my thoughts on the enrolment of children to grade school, commonly known as the primary school in singapore terms.

How do you select the school for your kid?

Reputation of school comes first or distance comes first?

When I listened to the Principal’s Orientation speech on 15 Nov, I was quite surprised that it was such a good primary school. There are many areas the school is strong at (we are shown the many awards they achieved over this year, 2008, I think its more than 10!) and the principal said that they focus and believe in enhancing the pupil’s strengths. I liked this aspect.

While some parents are glad their kids got into this good school, I was actually having mixed feelings after I cooled down. I actually got worried about being called up by the teacher on my boy’s walking about in school. I maybe overly paranoid, but that was the case throughout his kindergarten school life.

The MAIN reason for choosing this school was that we live within 1km of the school, its the nearest to our house.

CONVENIENCE was of utmost importance as I hate to see kids waking up early in the morning to prepare for school. Guess we are pretty lucky that a good school is near us, and that we got our kid in.

I seen parents enrolling their kids in good reputable schools that are faraway. Some of them are so worried about their future that no matter the distance, their kids got to get in a reputable school, basically, a school that rich kids go to. Trust me, its actually told to me by a mum, her kids are grown up now. She told me her way of raising her kids. She enrolled her kids in good schools so that they can get contacts of the rich. There was once her daughter was invited to a fellow classmate’s birthday party held in a yacht that can hold about 200 guests or so. There’s even fabulous lucky draw prizes to be won……

Well, I wasn’t at all impressed. I would value Convenience & Distance as the utmost importance, not the school’s reputation or the school’s population demographics.

I believe in fate. If he’s fated to meet nice good rich kids as his friends, so be it. If not, so be it too. I am more concerned about his well being.
